Gateway Classic Cars of Atlanta is offering this 1987 Monte Carlo SS for sale. What is a Monte Carlo SS? It was a package option re issued in 1983 to augment the redesigned Monte Carlo rear wheel drive body. The recession was tough on automakers so it wasnt until the economy showed signs of recovery that we saw the first stirrings of rear wheel drive muscle again. After the Camaro and Firebird got their new identities, it was Monte Carlos turn. What Chevrolet did was create an aerodynamic nose for NASCAR racing. To homologate the package, marketing came up with an SS coupe to roll out in mid 1983. The Monte Carlo SS came in two colors, dark blue or white. It was a split bench seat car without console shift. That was left on the column as a three-speed automatic transmission. You got the F41 firm ride and handling package, door decals, the 305 HO engine with Rochester ModQuadrajet four barrel carb, trunk spoiler, raised white letter Goodyear Eagle GT tires on 15 x7 mag wheels and bragging rights for your neighborhood that Spring. It was a sales hit for Chevy. The early SS Montes used the TH350 transmission with a midrange 3.42 axle. The 305 used an aluminum intake manifold with Corvette L81 camshaft; this was good for 165 horses. Inside it was still a bit tame but with NASCAR racing wins piling up and a genuine battle between Chevy and Ford brewing, sales were good. The 84 edition was a repeat of last years success with full gauge package plus tach, quick ratio power steering, F41 suspension, black door handles, window reveal moldings and drip rails, anti chip protected lower body, sport mirrors with remote control driver, rally wheels and Eagle GT raised white letter tires, trunk spoiler, door decals, dual exhausts and full courtesy lamps. Inside you still had split bench seats as standard gear but those SS embroidered headrests were a nice touch. These disappeared after 1984. Horsepower went up to 180 this year. Most of the 1984 SS cars got the TH350. Options include: AC, AM/FM radio with cassette player, power steering, power brakes, power locks, power seats, tilt wheel, power mirrors, seat belts, Cloth interior, rally wheels, radial tires. The 1993 sales brochure referred to the LT1 as “Americas Most Respected V8. The LT1 was the most powerful small block V8 ever placed in a production Corvette. It had powered more cars, both on the street and on the track than any other V8, and the LT1 was the update for a new generation of performance lovers. The giant custom-fabbed radiator helps keep things cool, and the new PaceSetter long-tube headers significantly improve the 5.0Ls exhalation, along with all new DeatschWerks injectors, plugs, mass air flow sensor and a custom dyno tuning done 7 months ago (all invoices to be include). In addition to the performance mods, the suspensions capabilities have been improved by installing welded-in subframe connectors and Bilstein struts and shocks, so this Pony handles like a dream. The performance tires that wrap the chromed American Racing mags add some extra grip to take advantage of the improved suspension modulation that the Bilsteins provide, as well as handle the extra grunt that the ProCharger adds to the engine. Inside, one of the first things youll notice is the Saleen white-faced gauges in the dash, and matching boost gauge and fuel pressure gauge in the center console stack. Youll also note that the newly reupholstered gray leather seats and carpet are in very good shape, which is what youd expect from a car with such low mileage and so few owners (two, to be exact). The SN95 body style came about in 1994 replacing the Foxbody Mustang which had already gained a cult following, so the order was tall for Ford to knock this one out of the ballpark. The new body style would carry the previous Windsor based 5.0-liter V8 for the 94 and 95 year but by the time 1996 came around it was replaced with a 4.6 liter modular V8 which came with a completely new design. The improvements came with overhead camshaft design, an improved fuel injection system, and eventually incorporated variable valve timing into the design. The 305-horsepower engine is attached to a 5-speed manual transmission which gives off the best feel of what its like to drive one of these performance machines. The Cobra was set aside from the regular Mustangs which a healthier tune and improved handling courtesy of SVT (Special Vehicle Teams) which was a division of Ford for performance applications.
